What are the Signs and Symptoms of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)?

  • Shortness of breath -- particulary with activity or when lying flat.
  • Constant cough, which may be dry or moist, especially at night. You may notice that you need to use more pillows than usual to be able to breathe and sleep.
  • Swelling of feet and legs.
  • Tiredness and weakness that keeps you from doing your normal activities. You may notice you are more fatigued and restless.
  • Waking up at night coughing or breathless.
  • Weight gain -- usually sudden; two or three pounds per day or more than five pounds in five days.
  • Noticeable decrease in urine output in a 24-hour period.
