DEXA, also known as bone densitometry, is a quick and painless X-ray that measures bone
density. It is most often used to detect
osteoporosis, but
it can also assess your risk for developing fractures. If you are already being treated for
bone loss, a follow-up DEXA can show if the therapy is effective.
DEXA is available at LakeWest Hospital, Mentor Medical Campus, Madison Medical Campus, and Chardon Medical Campus .
During the exam, an x-ray technologist will position you on a padded table and ask you to remain very still. The DEXA equipment will scan one or more areas of bone, usually the hip and spine, where most osteoporosis-related fractures occur. DEXA will compute a numerical reading of bone strength, called a T-score. A radiologist will interpret the results and a report will be sent to your physician, who will discuss the findings with you.
DEXA is performed by appointment only. You can schedule an appointment by calling Lake Hospital System's Centralized Scheduling Department at 1-866-652-5253.
